Help your pet feel calm and safe this Toowoomba storm season. Simple tips, a safe-space guide and when to chat with Dr Bec about a storm plan

Storm season has arrived across Toowoomba, bringing the big afternoon build-ups, the rumbles rolling across the range and the sudden flashes overhead. For plenty of pets, a thunderstorm is a lot to take in.

A little preparation before the first big one means your dog or cat has a plan, a place to go and you by their side.

Why storms feel so big for pets

Pets hear far more than we do,

and they often notice the first distant rumble, the change in air pressure and the shift in the light well before the rest of the household. It can show up in all sorts of ways:

           Pacing, panting or drooling

Trembling or sticking close to you

           Hiding

under beds, behind furniture or in the bathroom

           Barking, meowing or restlessness

           Scratching or digging at doors

Every pet is different, and some barely notice a storm at all. Knowing what your own pet's early signs look like gives you a head start on helping them settle.

Create a Calm Space Before the Storm Arrives

The best time to build a safe spot is on a sunny day.

A few simple touches turn a quiet corner into a favourite place:

           Pick a quiet inside room

away from windows, such as a laundry, hallway or bathroom.

           Add familiar bedding.

A favourite blanket or bed makes the space feel like theirs. A crate with a light blanket draped over it can make a cosy den for pets who already enjoy one.

           Layer in some gentle sound.

Soft music, a radio or the TV takes the edge off the rumbles.

Keep a special chew or treat

that only comes out on storm days, so the space becomes something to look forward to.

           Practice ahead of time.

Let your pet enjoy the space on calm days with a treat, so it already feels like a happy place when the weather turns.

          During the Storm

Calm company is one of the best tools you have.

Keep your voice and movements relaxed and cheerful.

Let your pet choose where to settle,

           including their hideaway.

Offer treats, gentle pats and company

           if they'd like them.

           Close the curtains and doors

to soften the flashes and the noise.

           Offer plenty of reassurance.

A worried pet is looking to you for comfort.

          Keep Everyone Safe and Secure

Pets who feel startled by a storm can sometimes bolt,

so a few simple checks help keep everyone home safe:

Bring pets inside before the weather arrives,

and keep gates, doors and screens closed.

Cats in Toowoomba LRC stay home

under local containment requirements, so a cosy indoor retreat suits them perfectly on storm days. Storm season is a good moment to check windows and screens are secure.

Check the ID tag and microchip details.

A collar with a current tag is a handy first step, and up-to-date microchip details make a quick reunion much more likely if anyone does slip out.

          Your Storm Season Checklist

☐ Quiet inside space set up with familiar bedding

☐ Special storm-day chew or treat ready

☐ Gates, doors, windows and screens secure

☐ Collar, ID tag and microchip details current

☐ A plan for who is home with your pet when storms are forecast

When to Chat With Dr Bec

Mild nervousness often eases with a calm space and some extra company.

If your pet is very distressed, hurting themselves while trying to hide or escape, damaging things around the house, or seems to be getting more worried with each storm season, it's worth a conversation.

Dr Bec can talk through options that suit your individual pet, and a plan put in place early in the season has time to settle in before the big storms arrive. A sudden change in behaviour is also worth a check-up, in case something else is going on.

Home visits suit this conversation well. Dr Bec can see how your pet behaves in their own space and help set up a safe spot in the place where it will actually be used.

Spring and Lost Pets: Why now's the time to check your pet’s Microchip Details

If your dog or cat has a microchip, now's a good time to check the details actually match up, because "registered" and "up to date" aren't the same thing.

Spring changes more around the house than most people realise, and a fair bit of it adds up to more opportunities for a pet to slip out fast and stealthily.

It's a good time now to make sure their microchip is actually doing its job if it's ever needed.

Keep an eye on Facebook if you want to see real time proof that this phenomena occurs… Locals posting missing pets into community groups while others are posting found pets as well. A quick trip to the vet for a found pet can cut through the trauma quickly with up to date microchip details.

          What changes in Spring

A few small shifts add up over the season:

Gates get left open more. Longer days, more time outdoors, more trips in and out with gardening, deliveries and visitors.

Doors and screens stay open for airflow. An open door is an open invitation for a curious cat or a dog chasing something interesting past the yard.

More visitors coming and going. Tradespeople, guests, and delivery drivers all mean more chances for a gate or door to be left ajar without anyone noticing.

Pets themselves get more active. Warmer weather means more energy, more exploring, and for some dogs, more determination to get past a fence they'd normally ignore.

None of this means spring is a risky season to be worried about, it's simply a good, practical prompt to check one thing that only takes a couple of minutes.

Australia doesn't have a centralised Pet Microchip Database

A common assumption is that a lost pet's microchip links straight back to one national system.

In reality, microchip details sit across a handful of separate registries, including Central Animal Records (CAR) and the Australasian Animal Registry (AAR). A lost pet can only be matched back to its owner if the details are on file, with whichever registry it's actually linked to, are current.

How to check your Pet's Microchip Details

Find out which registry your pet is on.

If you're not sure, petaddress.com.au is a free, independent lookup tool that can help identify which registry a microchip number is registered with.

Log in or contact that registry directly.

Most registries allow updates online once you've confirmed your pet's microchip number and your identity as the registered owner.

Check the details themselves, not just that they exist.

A microchip being "registered" isn't the same as being accurate. Confirm your current phone number, address, and email are all listed correctly, particularly if you've moved house or changed your number in the last year or two.

           Update anything that's changed.

Registries typically allow updates through their website or by phone. Keep any confirmation email or reference number, just in case.

Ask at your next visit if you're not sure.

If any of this feels confusing, it's a quick thing to check during a general health check-up or vaccination visit.

A simple check gives real peace of mind

None of this takes long, and it's the kind of thing that's easy to put off simply because it isn't urgent, until the moment it suddenly is. A couple of minutes now means a much better chance of a quick reunion if a pet ever does make it further than expected.

Come with us to our at-home appointment with Flo and Jerry

Every home visit has its own personality, and Flo and Jerry's was no exception.

This visit covered a general check-up, C5 vaccinations, and an arthritis injection for Flo, all without either of them needing to leave the comfort of home.

          Two very different patients

Jerry brought his usual awkward charm to the appointment, all elbows and unsure quite what to do with himself, the kind of endearing clumsiness that makes him impossible not to love. Flo, on the other hand, was fully food-motivated from start to finish, happily working her way through treats and pats while Dr Bec went about the visit.

Different personalities, same relaxed outcome, both handled easily at home, in their own space, surrounded by what's familiar.

          What the visit covered

          General check-up:

A full once-over, giving Dr Bec a clear picture of how Flo and Jerry are both doing overall.

C5 vaccination:

C5 vaccination protects dogs against five common and potentially serious conditions: canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus, and two strains of canine cough (parainfluenza and bordetella). Keeping this up to date is one of the simplest ways to protect a dog's long-term health.

Arthritis injection:

Flo also received an arthritis injection as part of her ongoing joint management. For dogs managing arthritis, these injections can help support joint health and comfort as part of a broader, ongoing care plan, tailored to what each individual dog needs.

Why this kind of visit works well at home

Appointments like this one show exactly why home visits suit multi-pet households so well.

Jerry and Flo were seen together, in their own environment, without the logistics of loading two pets into a car and managing them both in an unfamiliar waiting room. For pets managing an ongoing condition like arthritis, being examined at home also gives Dr Bec a much clearer sense of how they're really moving day to day.

Whether it's a routine check-up, vaccinations, or ongoing management for a condition like arthritis, Dr Bec is ready to help, right at home.

Bringing home a new kitten: Vaccinations, health checks and getting started right

A new kitten changes a household overnight.

Somewhere between the behind the door pounce and the sudden 2am zoomies

, there's also a practical checklist worth getting sorted early, and vaccinations sit right at the top of it.

          Why early vaccination matters

Kittens are born with some natural immunity passed on from their mother,

but this protection fades within the first few months of life, right around the time kittens start exploring the world and encountering more of it. Vaccinating on schedule helps close that gap, building up your kitten's own protection as their natural immunity tapers off.

What a kitten vaccination schedule looks like

Kittens typically need a series of vaccinations a few weeks apart,

rather than a single visit, since their immune systems build protection gradually over that early period. Your vet will map out the right schedule and timing for your individual kitten, taking into account their age, health, and any specific risk factors.

Alongside vaccinations, this early period is also a great opportunity to consider:

           Microchipping

: a simple, permanent way to help reunite you with your kitten if they're ever lost

           A full health check

: covering everything from general condition to eyes, ears and coat, giving you confidence your new family member is off to a healthy start

           Parasite prevention

: fleas, ticks and worming, particularly important while a kitten's immune system is still developing

A note on indoor cats in Toowoomba

Under local cat containment requirements, cats in Toowoomba need to stay on their own property, meaning no roaming.

Supervised time outside on a leash or in a secure enclosure is a lovely way for a kitten to experience the outdoors safely, while keeping them, local wildlife, and the neighbourhood happy. Worth factoring into how you plan your kitten's early routine and enrichment.

Making the first vet visit a good one

First impressions matter, for kittens as much as anyone else.

A stressful first vet experience can shape how a cat feels about check-ups for years to come.

Home visits offer a genuine advantage here:

your kitten gets their vaccinations, health check and microchipping in a familiar, calm environment, without the car ride or the unfamiliar smells and sounds of a waiting room full of other animals.

Caring for your senior dog: Arthritis, comfort and quality of life

Every dog owner knows that ‘pit of your stomach’ feeling…

One day your dog is bounding after the ball and then somewhere along the way, the bounds turn into trots, the trots turn into walks, the walks get a little shorter and then there’s the stiff limp that is just too hard to ignore. While it may be easy to put this down to "just getting older."

Often though, it's the first sign of something really worth paying attention to: arthritis.

          Spotting the early signs

Arthritis in dogs rarely appears all at once. Arthritis is a disease that tends to creep in gradually, which is exactly why it's often missed by pet owners until it's more advanced.

Keep an eye out for:

Slowing down on walks, or reluctance to go as far as they used to

Stiffness after resting, especially first thing in the morning

           Hesitating or struggling on stairs

Difficulty getting up from lying down

A change in mood, some dogs become quieter or more withdrawn when they're uncomfortable

None of these symptoms on their own are a cause for alarm

, but displayed together or if you're noticing a pattern over a few weeks, it's worth making an appointment with your vet.

          Why early management matters

Unfortunately, arthritis isn't curable. It is a disease though that is very manageable

the earlier it's picked up. And the earlier your dog gets a diagnosis, the more comfortable they can be kept for longer. Left unmanaged, ongoing joint discomfort can affect a dog's mobility, mood and they’re overall quality of life.

Pain relief and joint support: Different jobs, working together

Two of the most common tools in managing canine arthritis

are pain medication and joint supplements, and it's worth understanding that they do different jobs.

           Pain medication

helps manage day-to-day discomfort, making movement easier and more comfortable in the here and now.

           Joint supplements

work more gradually, supporting long-term joint health and potentially slowing further wear over time.

Used together

, under proper veterinary guidance, they can make a real difference to a dog's comfort and mobility. The right combination and dosage depends on your individual dog, their weight, age, and how advanced their arthritis is, so this is very much a conversation to have with your vet with your dog's needs kept at the forefront.

The benefit of a home assessment

One of the advantages of a home visit

is that Dr Bec gets to see your dog moving through their own environment, on their own furniture, up and down the stairs, and how the flooring in the home helps or hinders their movement.

Unfamiliar surroundings can often cause dogs to mask how it moves naturally through the day. An at home visit gives a clear and accurate picture of what's really going on in the environment the dog lives in.
